Last week we told you about the Open House and Model Auction. (Click HERE to read.) Now comes word of a truly exceptional model that will be part of the auction. This is a functioning 1:4 scale replica of a Manitowoc 4100W crawler crane that stands over 40 feet tall!
Here’s the DHS press release with the particulars…
DHS Auction Features 40 Foot Crane Scale Model
Berea, Ohio USA: 7/5/07 DHS Diecast Collectables, Inc., the industry leader in manufacturing and distributing diecast scale models of construction machinery and trucks, today announced a very special scale model which will be included in its annual toy auction on July 28th, 2007.
This is an amazing scale model, said auctioneer John Farkas when asked about the new
addition to the auction list. We have never seen anything like it. It is actually a fully operational
1:4 scale model of a Manitowoc 4100W crawler crane. The fully rigged crane model is over 40
feet high!
The crane machine house and crawlers are 8 feet wide, 10 feet long and 8 feet high. The model
itself is made almost entirely out of hardwoods. The only major metal parts are the frame, the
hook block and the power chains. The crane is actually powered by a 5.5 horsepower Honda
gasoline engine and all of the real functions operate. The tracks are independently powered so
that the model can rotate on its own axis, the boom can be raised and lowered and the hook block
moves up and down just like the real thing. Fully rigged, the model stands over 40 feet tall.
The scale model crane comes on its own custom designed dual-axle trailer that can be pulled by a
pickup truck. It can be unassembled and moved on the trailer with all of its major parts intact.
The model boom comes off and is stored on the trailer along with the counterweight and hook
block. Booming up and down the unit takes about ½ hour of work and two people.
The model was made by a Michigan man who used to deliver real cranes for Manitowoc
Corporation. He built it and sold it to its present owner who has decided to place the huge model
up for auction this year. Photos are available by contacting the auctioneer or DHS.
The DHS Open House weekend starts with the huge diecast scale model construction and truck
auction on Saturday, July 28th. The Toy Auction will be held at the Middleburg Heights
Community Center at 16000 Bagley Rd., Middleburg Heights, Ohio 44130 USA. The auction
preview starts at 12:00 noon and the auction itself will begin promptly at 1:00 pm. There are over
310 scale models to be auctioned, including some custom models and hard to find vintage items.
The weekend ends with the actual Open House day scheduled for Sunday, July 29th at the DHS
headquarters. This is the 7th annual event held at DHS.
