S2, Brute? Minichamps 1:43 Bentley S2 Cabriolet

Minichamps Bentley S2 Cabriolet 1:43 | $72.00

Bentley made a big change in October 1959, when it added a new 6.2 Liter V8 as its main power source. The OHV motor offered better performance, for sure – but adding the aluminum engine to the mix also did much to improve the car’s somewhat cranky accessories, most notably its air conditioning. On the outside, the Bentley’s visage remained solid, understated, and regal – all qualities that this Minichamps model carry over in scale. This sample of a 1960 S2 Cabriolet features beautiful dark blue paint and an ivory interior; small details like the chromed window framing, the door handles, and its delicate side trim are delivered in crisp tampo strikes and hard chromed parts. The castings for the top-down boot and seats are remarkable, with cast-in texturing and wrinkles that play beautifully against the wood-toned, completely legible dash and binnacle. The grille, headlights, and taillights are superb, as are the whitewall tires and deeply chromed wheel covers; break out the loupe for a look at the wee winged “B” on the rear bumper, and its impeccable, stylized companion atop the radiator. Our favorite detail? The smoked sun visors, done in butyrate, affixed to the windshield frame. This is a beautiful little car from one of the best in the business. – Joe Kelly, Jr.
