A Place in the Sun: Auto World’s 1:18 1956 Ford Sunliner

Auto World 1956 Ford Sunliner Convertible 1:18 | $79.99

Old Ertl molds never die – they just get re-appreciated. Auto World is once again making hay while the sun is shining with a classic tool from the zenith of 1:18, and they’re making the most of this 1956 Ford Sunliner’s good bones by adding a beautiful peacock blue and white two-toned paint scheme, higher-quality chrome and trim decos, and even a fuzzy carpeted floor in the car’s period-correct cabin. Neat lensing is set into the old Fairlane’s front end, along with a relief-painted grille and super tamped-on badging; open the hood, and the upscale 312 Ford “Thunderbird Special” Y-block V8 is painted up in orange and black, and topped with decorations on the valve covers and oil bath air cleaner. The interior under that fixed-in-place plastic roof is nicely turned out, with a sharp dash and tilt-able seat backs; the top’s texture “reads” like stretched fabric, and the model’s chassis wears dual exhausts and sharply masked paint detailing. Out back, the continental kit puts a final note of nostalgia on a song we hope to see played again and again: molds that made the 1:18 hobby fun, offered with higher quality build and paint. – Joe Kelly, Jr.
